Selecting Underlayment for a Metal Roof Assembly
Review metal roof underlayment by substrate, temperature suitability, moisture strategy, exposure limits, and compatibility with the specified panel system.

First identify what lies below the metal
A metal roof over a continuous deck and a metal roof over open structural framing are different assemblies. Before comparing rolls of underlayment, establish the support type and the intended insulation and moisture-control layers. Do not copy a deck-based detail into an open-framing roof without the manufacturer's and designer's review.
MBCI's Craftsman manual illustrates specific substrate and membrane arrangements. GAF's underlayment information likewise identifies suitable applications and substrates for a named product. These examples reinforce a practical point: roof materials are selected for a defined assembly, not simply because all of them are sold in the roofing aisle.

Ask four separate compatibility questions
An underlayment comparison becomes clearer when each requirement gets its own answer. An approval for one substrate or covering does not automatically answer the other questions.
| Question | Document to request | Record before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Is it suitable below this metal roof? | Panel and underlayment product instructions | Written system compatibility |
| Is the temperature rating suitable? | Product technical data | Required and offered service conditions |
| How does it attach to this substrate? | Installation instructions | Deck type and approved attachment method |
| How long may it remain exposed? | Manufacturer exposure limitations | Construction sequence and weather plan |
Do not confuse underlayment with every other control layer
Underlayment, air barrier, and vapor retarder describe different functions. One product may serve more than one function when its properties and installation support that use, but the name on the roll is not enough to establish the whole moisture strategy.
Ask the designer to identify the air-control and vapor-control layers on the roof section. Then check how they connect to the walls and penetrations. This is particularly useful when a proposed substitution changes a membrane from vapor open to vapor restrictive, or when an existing roof already contains layers that affect drying.
Review a realistic substitution example
Suppose an estimate names a particular self-adhered underlayment, but a distributor offers a different synthetic product that is available sooner. A sensible comparison would list substrate approval, metal-roof compatibility, service conditions, exposure period, attachment, and connection details. Availability is relevant, but it does not close those technical questions.
Send the comparison to the responsible design and roofing parties before the order changes. Keep the accepted product data and revision with the roof submittal. If the alternative requires different accessories or preparation, include those items in the scope and schedule rather than leaving them for the crew to discover.
Coordinate edges and temporary exposure
The material list should include the approved treatment at roof edges, valleys, curbs, and transitions, with responsibility for each stage of work. Ask who inspects the substrate, who documents damaged material, and who authorizes covering it with panels.
A stated exposure limit is a maximum under defined conditions, not a promise that every partially completed roof is ready to protect occupied space. If the construction program needs temporary weather protection, have the project team specify that plan explicitly. Track installation dates by roof area so exposure questions can be answered from records.
Prepare the release package
Before release, assemble the roof section, exact membrane data, approved accessory list, installation instructions, and substitution decisions. Place the panel manufacturer's requirements beside the underlayment manufacturer's requirements so incompatible assumptions are visible.
Use a short unresolved-items list for any missing substrate, temperature, exposure, or transition information. Closing those items early gives purchasing a stable specification and gives the installer a defined assembly to follow. This guide organizes the selection process; the project documents control actual installation.
Common questions
Is every synthetic underlayment suitable under metal panels?
No. Verify the exact product's approved covering, substrate, temperature suitability, and installation requirements.
Can underlayment replace a condensation-control design?
No. Moisture control requires review of the complete assembly, including insulation, air leakage, vapor behavior, and indoor conditions.
