Anchor Selection Checklist for Steel Framing
Questions to organize before comparing anchors for concrete, masonry, and other base conditions.

Start with the anchor condition
Anchor selection should trace back to the structural condition, applicable requirements, and responsible design-professional direction. Record the anchor type and designation exactly. If a condition is unresolved, obtain clarification from the responsible professional before buying.
A supplier can help identify product documentation, but anchor type, spacing, edge distance, embedment, and design values must remain with responsible design professionals.
Describe the base material
Concrete, grout-filled masonry, hollow masonry, and other substrates have different product listings and installation limits. For concrete, identify the specified strength, member condition, and whether the application involves cracked concrete, seismic provisions, or overhead installation when applicable.
- Base material and specified strength or unit type
- Existing or new construction condition
- Member thickness and accessible drilling depth
- Edge distance, spacing, embedment, and fixture thickness from the detail
- Dry, wet, exterior, coastal, or otherwise corrosive exposure
Confirm installation constraints
Installation method affects tooling, hole preparation, inspection, cure time, and sequencing. Adhesive systems can require specific cleaning equipment and temperature controls. Mechanical anchors have their own drilling, torque, and hole-condition instructions. Confirm that the exact instructions can be followed in the field.
Check the exact supporting documents
Identify whether you need a current technical data sheet, safety information, evaluation report, product-specific installation instructions, or compliance documentation. Check edition dates and model numbers so the documents correspond to the item being compared.
Confirm details before buying
Compare the final item description with the applicable anchor information. Verify quantities by condition and keep installation documentation available to the team using the item.
Prepare a supply inquiry
- Record the project drawing or detail and the specified product, profile, or system.
- List the complete configuration, physical units, quantities, and cuts per piece.
- Request current manufacturer documents; confirm compatibility, price, and availability before ordering.
- Obtain the responsible professional's review for loads, code requirements, or installation.
